Friends of Nias Fundraising Drive March 2025

Friends of Nias Fundraising Drive March 2025

Honouring the legacy of our founder, Dr Raf Ghabrial, we are launching a fundraising drive during the month of March 2025 for Friends of Nias.

Dr Ghabrial tragically passed away in July 2023. Since then, his team and family have been working hard to keep the clinic’s doors open, continuing Raf’s work and honouring his legacy. The clinic continues to operate 6 days a week, with a dedicated local team of 7 (nurses, midwives, pharmacist & manager), with 2 local doctors soon to join the team. The Surfing Doctors have also come on board, to help with everything from the management + oversight of the clinic, to supporting the medical volunteers, to marketing. We are also very grateful for the volunteers who have continued to come through, sharing their skills, time and expertise – many who have also volunteered with the Surfing Doctors at their clinic in G-Land!

This shared effort has meant that the clinic has not only stayed open, but has been able to evolve. In 2024 alone, the clinic treated over 2,100 patients. This year, the clinic is also about to roll out two new projects which will address endemic health issues on the island – diabetes and Helicobacter pylori infection. These projects are being led by volunteer Charlie, who has spent majority of his time in Nias since February 2024, with his wife Nancy and their son.

As our clinic continues to rely solely on donations, the aim of our fundraising drive is to raise $50,000 during the month of March. This will fund the clinic for the next 2 years, including funding these two new health projects. All donations made during the month of March will be matched.
