Other Things to Do in Nias

What other activities are there in Nias?

L
K

In addition to surfing, Nias offers a variety of unique cultural and natural attractions:

  • Beaches and Nature: Nias is home to beautiful beaches. You can enjoy swimming, snorkelling or just relaxing and soaking up island life. The Keyhole is a great place to swim and snorkel too.
  • Stone Jumping (Lompat Batu): We recommend a trip to the King’s Village (Bawomataluo) where you can watch locals perform the traditional and thrilling stone-jumping ritual, a rite of passage unique to Nias.
  • Traditional Villages: Visit villages like Bawomataluo to experience traditional wooden architecture, local handicrafts, and the distinctive lifestyle of the Nias people.
  • Museum Pusaka Nias: Located in Gunungsitoli, this museum offers an in-depth look at the history, culture, and artifacts of the Nias people. The museum is fascinating and its curator (Father Johannes) is very knowledgeable. There is a hotel attached to the museum too.
  • Visit the local medical centre: If you wish to visit the local medical centre (Puskesmas) this can be arranged.
  • Waterfalls: there are waterfalls nearby including Helaowo Waterfall Gomo, Namozihono Waterfall, and Sihugu-hugu Waterfall.
  • Watch the sunset: Heading into the village to view the sunset is also recommended.

To explore the island or nearby villages you can speak to your accommodation provider about hiring a motorbike/moped (please wear a helmet) or a driver.

Cash and ATMs

What is the local currency?

L
K

Local currency is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Are there ATMs or places to get cash in Sorake Beach?

L
K

ATMs and cash facilities are limited in Sorake Beach. There are ATMs located at most airports on the way to Nias, the last of which is Medan airport (there are no ATMs at Gunungsitoli airport). Or, you may be able to ask your driver on the way down from Gungunsitoli airport to stop in Teluk Dalam to withdraw cash to cover your spending needs during your stay (be careful, some ATMs do not accept visa cards). Teluk Dalam is only a 20-30 minute drive from the clinic in Sorake beach, so it is relatively easy to get there to access an ATM during your stay.

What Should I Bring?

What clothes should I wear while volunteering?

L
K

Clothing in the clinic is casual at all times.

Is there anything else I should bring?

L
K

Bringing a snorkel is recommended, as the Keyhole is a fantastic spot to explore when the waves are small. Additionally, lightweight, breathable clothing, sun protection, mosquito repellent and any essential medications or first-aid items are advised. Medical supplies, in any form, are also appreciated and can greatly benefit the clinic’s resources.

What if I have forgotten something?

L
K

The local shops in Sorake beach have limited variety of goods, however if you require items not available here there are more shops in Teluk Delam (30 minute drive from Sorake).

Logistics

What will happen when I arrive?

L
K

Before you arrive, we will advise the team in Nias of your arrival. As Sorake is a small village, you can ask your accommodation host where the clinic is located and they will show you. On the first morning of your volunteer placement, the local nurse/midwife rostered on for the day will meet you at the clinic when it opens and show you around.

If you have any issues with this, you can introduce yourself to Raffiel/Alvin/their family across the road from the clinic at Raffiel Nias Surf Camp and they will open the clinic and show you around.

Who can I contact if I need help?

L
K

After you commit to volunteering, we will send you a volunteer information document with further information about the clinic along with contact details for the team members.
